Travel/Lodging

Traveling by car
Everything is very far apart in Wyoming, and public transportation is virtually non-existent. For those flying in, we highly recommend renting a car. Reservations should be made well in advance, particularly when flying into the smaller regional airports—our relative proximity to Yellowstone can create scarcity.
Story is approximately 20 miles/30 minutes south of Sheridan, WY. Use your phone's GPS, as people tend to get turned around when they reach Story. Parking will be available on-site or nearby, but we encourage carpooling in order to preserve space.
Nota bene: Though you won’t have to worry about traffic, please remain watchful for deer/wildlife, as they like to jump out in front of your car.
Traveling by plane
The nearest major airport is in Denver, CO, 450 miles/6 hours south of Story. This is likely the cheapest option for air travel, but it is also the farthest away.
Three regional airports lie between 1.5 and 2.5 hours away. They are located in Billings, MT; Casper, WY; and Gillette, WY.
The closest but most expensive option is to fly directly into Sheridan, WY.
Rental cars are available at all of the above options, but please book well in advance (see above).
Lodging
We have reserved a small block of rooms at the Best Western in downtown Sheridan for August 8–11. The rooms are simple but clean, and are within walking distance of shopping, food, and entertainment. Local lodging is extremely limited for that weekend—we are not sure why, but we suspect the Seventh-Day Adventists. In any event, please contact us if you would like us to transfer a room reservation to you.
If you prefer Airbnb and VRBO to hotel rooms, you might find a handful of options in Sheridan, Story, Banner, or Buffalo. We recommend checking regularly as new options might open up. We also recommend reaching out before finalizing your reservation to avoid ending up further away than you might anticipate.
Other stuff to do
If you should choose to stay over several days, you will find plenty to do. Story is located in the idyllic foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, which offer sightseeing, camping, hiking, and fishing. Sheridan and nearby Buffalo both have plenty of museums, restaurants, and boutiques to explore. Yellowstone National Park is about four hours away. As we get closer to August, we will update this page with a list of recommended places/activities.
